How do I get a Mississippi nursing license?

For the Mississippi nursing license you should apply to the Mississippi Board of Nursing.

  • Firstly, you should fill the application form
  • Secondly, request your official transcript and degree from your university or college to be sent directly to the Board
  • Thirdly, you should complete a criminal background check. For that, contact the Board to schedule an appointment for you to be fingerprinted
  • After that, you should register for and pass the NCLEX exam

The Mississippi nursing licenses should be renewed every two years. The renewal period starts from September 1 each year.

How long does it take to get a Mississippi nursing license?

Is Mississippi a compact state for nursing?

In short, yes, Mississippi has been a member of the Nursing Licensure Compact since 2001. This means that nurses who live in another compact state can easily move to the state of Mississippi and work under a multistate license issued in their own home states. Moreover, those nurses who live in Mississippi can work in other compact states under a license issued by the Mississippi Board of Nursing.

But, LPNs and RNs will need to apply for an endorsement license. The endorsement option is for candidates who have passed the NCLEX national licensing exam.

How many CEUS do Mississippi Nurses need?

Licensed nurses in Mississippi will need to complete a minimum of 20 contact hours of accepted continuing education during each license renewal period.

So, to renew your license you should submit one of the following documents:

  1. Proof of the successfully completion of a board approved Reorientation Program for RNs or LPNs
  2. Completion of twenty contact hours of continuing education directly related to nursing practice
  3. Proof of successfully completion of a minimum of three semester hours of nursing credits offered by a nursing education program

The renewal period is every 2 years. So, you will need to complete the education requirements during that period.
